SOFT POWER The Brussels Way of Making the City

EXHIBITION

“Soft Power: The Brussels Way of Making the City” exhibition in Basel, initiated by the Swiss Architecture Museum S AM, highlights the essential conditions for high-quality architectural culture through the work of BMA. The exhibition opened on the 18th of October and will remain open until March 16th, 2025. It will then continue its journey through various cities, with the intention of making a stopover in Brussels.

The entire BMA team was hands on for the opening. The event was also an opportunity for the BMA to meet Beat Aeberhard, Kantonsbaumeister of Basel, and his team. For two days, there were enriching exchanges of Swiss and Belgian practices and know-how, offering a cross-section of European urban planning. These discussions were punctuated by contributions from Beat Aeberhard, Lilitt Bollinger, Salome Bessenich; and Kristiaan Borret, Tine Vandepaer, Géraldine Lacasse and Frederik Serroen -all of this lively moderated by Andreas Ruby. The trip ended with a cycling tour of Basel, in order to discover the city’s emblematic projects and future developments.

If this exhibition and these discussions have highlighted the work of the BMA team, then it is above all thanks to the dynamism of the architectural scene in Brussels and all of the actors involved in the making of the city. To extend the dialogue, the Kantonsbaumeister of Basel will be in Brussels to participate at a special event on the 21st of November, celebrating the end of Kristiaan Borret’s term of office.
