The diagnosis shows that the Sustainable Neighborhood Contract Héliport – Antwerp offers a unique opportunity for the community life in the neighborhood. It provides the possibility to support social coordination and projects based on the priorities discussed with local actors, while allowing new actors to emerge. This stimulation must be accompanied by the expansion of public amenities, both to the south and north of the neighborhood. In this way, existing needs are met.
Now, the current Millénaire community center no longer meets expectations: it suffers from a lack of space, issues with technical and sanitary installations, and furthermore, its location, in the center of an elevated platform, makes it difficult to organize its activities. The City has therefore decided to build a new community center along Héliport Avenue. This new building will be integrated into part of the existing parking lot, over two floors, to create a better connection between the public space and the esplanade. The space freed up can be turned into a playground, a vegetable garden or other functions linked to the Maximilien farm. Quieter functions that will benefit the residents of the housing around the platform.
The City aims to build a new, functional, comfortable community center that is exemplary in terms of sustainability. Thanks to its new location, it will be more visible, more accessible within the neighborhood and will contribute to the activation of public space.
