Institut des ursulines

COMMON SPACES

The Sacré-Cœur site, one of the two Institut des Ursulines secondary school branches in Koekelberg, is to undergo renovation works supported by the School Contract. The aim of this initiative is to strengthen the links between the school and the surrounding neighborhood. With this in mind, the project consists of two separate actions grouped together in a single operation. Firstly, it involves the conversion of an existing building on Rue de la Tannerie into a multi-purpose sports facility open to local people, with the addition of a caretaker’s flat. The project also includes renovating the dining room and kitchen in the main building, which are currently in a dilapidated state, with a view to creating new, bright, pleasant spaces.

The building at 33, Rue de la Tannerie is owned by the school and is currently used as a storage area for works there. The school’s two sports halls are small, have no changing rooms and are constantly full. The lack of facilities suitable for young people (meeting places, sports, culture, etc.), and particularly for girls, is one of the major issues highlighted by the School Contract diagnosis process.

The Institut des Ursulines secondary school is looking for a multidisciplinary team (architects, experts in structural engineering and related techniques, building energy performance and acoustic engineers, and health and safety coordination experts) to work on the overall design of this major transformation and new extension project. As well as aspects of urban integration and the spatial quality of functions, particular attention will be paid to aspects of circularity and sustainability, particularly regarding the choice of materials. Keeping the project on schedule and on budget is also a major concern.
