BETTER CONNEXIONS IN THE JACQUET DISTRICT

Development of public spaces

In Koekelberg, the Jacquet district stretches between the Boulevard Leopold II, the Chaussée de Gand and the railway, which divides the municipality into two distinct parts. This enclave of ‘historic’ Koekelberg is located on the south side of this division and is marked by its industrial and popular past. Today, the area is densely built and inhabited, but lacks breathing space and continuous flows, and suffers from heavy through-traffic.

One of the main challenges identified in the Jacquet Sustainable Neighbourhood Contract is to ensure overall coherence in order to improve the neighbourhood’s living environment through the redevelopment of a series of public spaces in Rue Jean Jacquet and the adjacent streets, the surroundings of the Victoria Park and the paths crossing the Schmitz block.

The municipality of Koekelberg is looking for a multidisciplinary team in order to meet the following general objectives: to improve traffic and pedestrian flows, to favour the use of permeable materials, to increase the presence of plantings in the public space and to integrate lighting, playground equipment and signage, with a gender-sensitive approach.
