PUBLIC EQUIPMENT SIMONIS

A hotbed of culture in the heart of Simonis

The Urban Renewal Contract 6 “Autour de Simonis” has brought the ambition forward to create a socio-cultural programme on the site of the infill formed by the two empty adjoining plots overlooking Place Eugène Simonis. As a major modal and metropolitan hub in the west of Brussels, the square is a focal point.

Following a participatory programme study, the pillars of the future facility were defined: reception and support for socio-cultural associations, creative residencies (visual arts, music, media, etc.), and promotion of culture in everyday life. The idea of planting a space dedicated to artistic production right at the heart of the Place Simonis receives strong backing from the municipality of Koekelberg and the Brussels-Capital Region.

The prime location of the future socio-cultural centre is one of the key strengths of the project, which will have to factor this feature into its architectural design. The major challenge will be to reconcile the harmonious integration of the building into the urban fabric of the Place Simonis with the scale of an inclusive centre. Combined with a public programme (social canteen, events venue, etc.), this centre will serve as a walk-in venue for the neighbourhood, raising awareness among local residents as well as a wider population.

The Municipality of Koekelberg is looking for a multidisciplinary team with skills in architecture, stability engineering, special techniques engineering, PEB consultancy and acoustics expertise.
