HOSPITABLE PUBLIC SPACES FOR ANDERLECHT

Refurbishment of the Jorez, Fiennes and Grisar space

In the 1980s, the extension of the metro towards Cureghem left Anderlecht with several poorly defined public spaces, including the Fiennes, Grisar and Jorez areas, better known to the wider public as Clemenceau Square. Although all of them were redeveloped during the 2000s, they still carry the image of residual spaces. The consequences are clearly visible: illegal dumping, a general feeling of insecurity and, in the case of Clemenceau Square, a temporary closure with barriers. A more durable solution is now required.

With this mission, the municipality of Anderlecht aims to redevelop these spaces, with the main objective of restoring their quality of use. Small, targeted interventions are planned, within a short timeframe and with a relatively tight budget, to make the spaces more pleasant, greener and better suited for play. Safety and management are also key concerns, particularly for the Jorez space, where a closure is being considered. Finally, the choice of planting and materials should prioritise robustness and low maintenance.

While each space has specific functional and technical characteristics requiring a tailored approach, the municipality nevertheless seeks architectural coherence. In addition, a participatory process involving local residents is expected during the preparation of the preliminary design.

Given the stated ambitions, the project must strike a balance between creative, efficient and sustainable architecture on the one hand, and cost-effectiveness on the other, both in terms of design and in the future management, maintenance and renovation of the spaces.
