BUILDINGS F&G AT USQUARE

The transformation of the Usquare.brussels site is continuing, with buildings F&G now under study. This intervention is part of a set of five major operations aimed at implementing the ambitious programme for the reconversion of the site, to provide facilities, family and student housing, public space, and an Ecopole at the heart of which buildings F&G are located.

With a surface area of approximately 6,500 m², these buildings possess undeniable heritage value. The project will be developed on an occupied site and will help consolidate the presence of the ULB and VUB Fablabs, as well as the facilities for the “DecarbonLab” and the “Helios Foundation headquarters”.
The mission relating to the accommodation of the universities is a partial one and focuses on bringing the buildings into compliance. It is tied to a strict schedule that must be adhered to rigorously. The fit-out for the innovation centre and the Helios Foundation involves a full architectural commission.
This project is aimed at students, researchers and companies alike. The management of access, flows of people and materials therefore represents a key challenge to make the functions legible and to ensure smooth circulation and use.

The Université Libre de Bruxelles is looking for a multidisciplinary team capable of addressing the specificities of the project, such as the heritage character of the buildings, intervention on an occupied site, expectations in terms of circular economy and sustainable development for the redevelopment of the entire site, the integration of the project within the framework of the PAD barracks, and a proper coordination with ongoing operations.
