The municipality of Schaerbeek is preparing for the arrival of Metro 3. It wishes that this will deliver an improvement in the living environment and new opportunities for economic and social development for local neighbourhoods. These improvements will rely, in particular, on the urban integration of the metro stations, high-quality redevelopment of the public spaces around the stations and the provision of additional services and facilities where the metro project allows.
This assignment concerns the future Verboekhoven metro station and its immediate surroundings. These surroundings cover two sections of approximately one hectare on either side of Rue Waelhem: on the plot currently occupied by Lidl on the north side, and on the municipal plot currently occupied by the waste sorting centre on the south side. The mission has two components:
• Developing a master plan that covers urban planning, architectural design, environmental considerations and urban programming for the two blocks affected by the implementation of the metro exits of the future Verboekhoven station.
• Developing a study to define public facilities to be built above the Verboekhoven metro station on the southern parcel of Rue Waelhem. This study will contain a programme vision, architectural principles and operational scenarios for the project.
