RECONNECTING OPEN SPACES

Redevelopment of open spaces

When the basic programme for the “Villas de Ganshoren” Sustainable Neighbourhood Contract was drawn up, an analysis of the various open spaces was carried out. This in-depth analysis highlighted priority issues such as: developing ecological connections and reducing spatial fragmentation, improving the appropriation of spaces by users, increasing biodiversity and permeability, promoting soft mobility, etc. These ambitions apply to the various open spaces involved in the project, including shared streets, squares and parvis, thresholds spaces and the park.

The projects aims open space with a view to variety, social cohesion, conviviality, mixed use and accessibility. One will also have to take a broader view than the perimeter of the neighbourhood contract to provide connections with the ecological spaces that provide structure on a regional scale. In addition, the client is drawing particular attention to the need for projects to be developed through an active participatory approach.

The Municipality of Ganshoren is looking for a multi-disciplinary team that includes, in the application stage, only the essential skills in the design of public spaces and landscapes and in participation. Other skills, such as expertise in ecology and integrated rainwater management, in soil pollution, in accessibility and stability engineering, will only be required at the second stage of the competition proposal.
