The Brussels-Capital Region intends to develop a new public swimming facility on the roof of Manufakture, a building on the site of the Anderlecht Slaughterhouse. This project is being coordinated by SAU/MSI, in collaboration with Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie (VGC) and the municipality of Anderlecht. It aims to address the shortage of public swimming pools in Brussels, particularly for swimming lessons, club activities and open-air swimming. It forms part of the wider transformation of the Slaughterhouse site.
The procedure launched is a DBFMO contract: the selected partner will be responsible for the design, construction, financing, maintenance and exploitation of the infrastructure. The project aims at teams and operators who can combine architectural and technical expertise, construction experience, financial knowledge and know-how regarding the maintenance and operation of aquatic facilities.
The programme combines several functions. It provides for at least one 25-metre indoor pool, suitable for school swimming lessons, clubs and individual use, and a dedicated area specifically for swimming education. The project must also facilitate outdoor swimming. Particular attention is expected to be paid to accessibility for people with physical disabilities.
The rooftop installation presents a unique architectural, structural and technical challenge. Although the project forms part of the built environment of Manufakture, it will have its own architectural identity. It must also score highly in terms of sustainability, including the possibility of connecting the infrastructure to the heating network at the site.
The bouwmeester maître architecte accompagnies this project and will be a member of the advisory committee.
