The municipal primary school Paviljoen, located between the busy Navezstreet and the Van Ooststreet in Schaerbeek, shares its entrance and playground with the adjacent school René Magritte. As a result, the playground is widely divided through numerous fences. Moreover, this fragmented playground is an asphalt plain with an overcrowded playground equipment for the youngest children in the middle. The place is not very stimulating for the children. More greenery and more play stimuli, that’s what this playground needs!
As part of the regional quality guide for the redevelopment of school playgrounds in Brussels, teachers, pupils and parents have already developed a ‘dream scenario’ to which the VGC has awarded a €100,000 subsidy (Buitenspel). With this subsidy, the Paviljoen school wants to provide the playground with more and varied play incentives. It also wants to soften and green as much as possible.
Of the many ideas that were put forward, the school mainly wants to provoke interaction between the pupils of the two schools and offer them a wide range of games. The playground has to be set up in different atmospheres that respond to the various talents of the pupils.
Now that the participation phase is over, the focus is on co-production of the chosen improvements together with the school and neighbourhood associations.
ASSIGNMENT AND SKILLS:
The municipality of Schaerbeek is looking for a team for a complete design assignment for the partial reconstruction of the playground of the municipal primary school Paviljoen. The design team must be in touch with greening strategies and a playful approach aimed at co-production. The municipality will pay particular attention to the technical competence of the team to manage the implementation of an ambitious design in a dense urban context.
The minimum skills required for this mission are as follows:
– Design of public space (playgrounds, school playgrounds)
– Sustainable development (biodiversity, water management)

INDICATIVE PLANNING :
– 1 November: 3 teams will be invited to submit an offer;
– Week of 9 November: site visit and information session;
– 1 December: submission of tenders;
– Beginning of December: oral presentation of the tenders to the advisory committee;
– December 2020: award;
– January 2021: start of the contract.
